Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Legislative representation plays a critical role in the development of communities, as elected representatives are responsible for advocating for and securing resources for their constituencies. In Shendam LGA, Plateau State, legislative representatives have been tasked with promoting community development through the implementation of constituency projects. These projects, which range from infrastructure development to social welfare programs, are vital in addressing the needs of the local population. However, the effectiveness of these projects in fostering sustainable development remains a point of debate (Aliyu, 2024). This study seeks to examine the impact of legislative representation on community development in Shendam LGA, focusing on the implementation and outcomes of constituency projects.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While constituency projects are intended to contribute to the development of local communities, there have been concerns about the adequacy, transparency, and impact of such projects in Shendam LGA. Issues such as political favoritism, mismanagement of funds, and a lack of follow-up on completed projects have led to skepticism about the true benefits of these initiatives. This study aims to assess the impact of legislative representation on community development through the lens of constituency projects, evaluating the challenges and successes associated with their implementation in Shendam LGA.
